FIREMEN RESCUE GIRL IN NICK OF TIME
A 19-year-old Navarre college student will be
able to continue pursuit of her degree after being rescued from
the cold, choppy waters of Santa Rosa Sound. The Navarre
resident nearly drowned after responding on a jet-ski to a
paddleboat emergency involving her sister, and a friend visiting
from Kansas. The incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on Oct.
16 after strong northerly winds associated with a passing cold
front whipped up 2- to 3-foot waves in the Sound. Midway Fire
District Chief Jonathan Kanzigg and FireMedic Josh Ward –
manning an inflatable rescue boat and following portable radio
directions from Holley-Navarre Fire Department Chief Ron Norton
on the shore – reached the exhausted and semiconscious Cassandra
Dunn just as she was slipping under the under the surface of the
water. She likely would have drowned seconds later.“There have
only been a few times in my career where I have actually saved
somebody’s life who was seconds away from dying,” Kanzigg said.
“This was definitely one of them.

Missing Bird Leads to High Angle
Rescue 04/21/2008

At approximately 3pm on
Monday, Firefighters were dispatched to a high-angle rescue at
Harrison Avenue and Pins Lane. Crews were called for a man stuck
in a tree. The Fuller family of 3165 Pins Lane had lost their
African Grey Parrot who had flown into the trees a day before.
The owners were offering a $100 reward for the parrot, but were
able to find it themselves in the treetops just down the street
from their home. They tried coaxing the bird to the ground, but
when it did not come down, a man climbed the tree to retrieve
it. Once he caught the bird, he was unable to get down. Crews
responded and were on scene within four (4) minutes. Crews used
the 100 foot Ladder Truck to reach the victim who was stuck
about 30 feet in the air and were able to rapidly assess the man
and bring him and the bird to safety within minutes. No one
was injured during this rescue and the bird has been reunited
with the family.

Hazardous Material Incident 01/10/2008

Midway's cross
trained Firefighter/Haz-Mat Technicians were dispatched to a gas
leak on 1/10/08. Upon arrival, crews found a 200 gallon residential
propane tank approximately ½ full that had been washed up during
Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The tank's bottom had rusted out and started
leaking. Area homeowners were safely evacuated while firefighters
mitigated the situation. Firefighters then promptly isolated the
tank from any ignition source and used what is called the "Red
Dragon", a tool which burns off the remaining gas inside the tank,
to avoid a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor
Explosion). Firefighters from Holley-Navarre provided aid and an
engine from Escambia County’s Pensacola Beach moved up to assist
with additional calls during the incident.
Structural Collapse 08/27/2007

Firefighters were dispatched to a structural
collapse 08/27/07. Upon arrival, crews found two workers needing
immediate ALS treatment. A third floor under construction had
collapsed, pinning the workers on the second floor. Midway
Firefighter/Paramedics were able to assess and treat the
patients while on the second floor with ALS procedures. Both
patients were safely removed from the second floor by Midway
Firefighters and Pensacola Beach Firefighters and transported to
local hospitals for treatment.
